What Is Bacteriostatic Water and Why Do Peptides Need It?

Bacteriostatic water is sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol added as a preservative. Unlike plain sterile water, it doesn't need to be used in a single sitting โ€” the benzyl alcohol inhibits bacterial reproduction, which is exactly what's needed when a vial is punctured multiple times over a multi-week dosing protocol.

This isn't a peptide-specific invention โ€” it's the same principle behind preservative effectiveness testing that pharmaceutical manufacturers run on any multi-dose parenteral (injectable) product, governed by USP Chapter <51>, which requires demonstrated antimicrobial activity against a standard panel of challenge organisms over a 28-day period. That 28-day figure is where the common "use within a month of reconstitution" guidance for peptides comes from.

Benzyl alcohol doesn't sterilise the vial outright โ€” it stops microorganisms introduced via the septum from multiplying to problematic levels between draws. It's compatible with the vast majority of research peptides at the concentrations used in laboratory protocols, which is why it's the standard solvent for reconstitution rather than plain sterile or distilled water.
