Peptides and proteins are built from the same basic unit — amino acids joined by peptide (amide) bonds — so the distinction is really about scale. A peptide is generally defined as a chain of 2 to 50 amino acids, while a protein is a chain of 50 or more. Within that range, chemists further split peptides into oligopeptides (2–20 amino acids) and polypeptides (longer, single linear chains).
The cut-off is somewhat arbitrary and varies by organisation — the FDA, for instance, classifies compounds under 40 amino acids as peptides and those above as proteins. What matters biologically is structure: proteins are large enough to fold into complex secondary, tertiary, and sometimes quaternary structures, while peptides tend to have simpler, less rigidly defined shapes.
